Edwin Lochridge Cox (1921-2020) was a visionary collector with a connoisseur’s eye, building one of the most prestigious and important collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. Seminal paintings acquired by Cox — including rarely seen masterpieces by Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh — will be offered by Christie’s in The Cox Collection: The Story of Impressionism this November. The Cox collection tells the story of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, crystallizing the defining stylistic and thematic characteristics of these key art historical movements. ‘He devoted himself with connoisseurship to the acquisition of these works; he was after best of the best and that’s clear in the works he collected,’ says Vanessa Fusco, senior specialist and Head of the 20th Century Evening Sale at Christie’s.
